Preparing for a studio shoot
Preparing for a studio shoot is often a daunting task. How can I prepare? To get the best out of your studio photos, it’s a good idea to do some preparation beforehand. Planning ahead will make your photos successful and bring out the best in you. Successful images come from each of us, so trust your photographer. Even during the shoot, the photographer will show you the images on the camera screen and together you can think about good angles.
Here are some guidelines and tips that can help you plan, but it’s up to you to choose which ones to follow. It’s your image, so the most important thing is to be yourself. A photo session is usually a pleasant experience, so enjoy it.
Outfits and style
Choose timeless colours
- Calm tones such as black, white, grey or natural colours create an elegant impression, for example in a representation photo.
- Avoid bright or multi-coloured shapes, which can distract from the face.
- Avoid stripes, squares, balls. They can make the picture look a bit restless
- If you want to stand out, you can be flashier.
For longer shoots you can also bring alternatives, within the shooting time you can make a change of outfit.
- Classic style: neat suit or elegant dress
- A more casual ensemble: jeans and knitwear
- Also remember to clean and iron your clothes beforehand. Our cameras take accurate pictures, so any wrinkles will be visible.
Pay attention to detail
- Matching jewellery, a stylish watch or other accessories can add personality.
- Ties, scarves or other similar details work well in a formal style.
Eyeglasses
- Keep your glasses with you: if you wear glasses every day, take them with you as they are part of your identity and can add a natural look to your photos.
- Ensure cleanliness: clean the lenses thoroughly before shooting to avoid leaving fingerprints or dust that can show up in lighting.
- Reflection prevention: the photographer will try to adjust the lighting angle to minimise reflections.
- Shooting without glasses: if you want to take pictures without glasses, make sure that the frames have enough time to smooth out the marks on your nose.
- Spare glasses: if you own more than one pair of glasses, you can bring different styles to create different looks.
Make-up and hair
A natural but finished look
- Light and sophisticated make-up evens out your skin and highlights your best features. A matte powder helps to reduce the shine of your skin in photos.
- Choose shades that complement your natural skin tone and feel comfortable to you.
Get your hair right
- A neat hairstyle, or a simple style, is a good choice. You can also book an appointment with a hairdresser or barber before the shoot.
For small repairs
- Bring make-up accessories and a comb or brush so you can make quick touch-ups if you want.
Props and atmosphere
Personalise your photo
- Consider if you want to use any props in your photos to emphasise your personality. For example, books, flowers, instruments or other objects that are important to you can add a sense of story to your photos. Be aware that some props or additional elements will affect the price of the photo.
According to your hobby
- If you have a particular interest, you can bring it into the description. It will make your photos unique and memorable. Be aware, however, that some additional elements will affect the price of the photo.
Cooperation with the photographer
Trust a professional
- The photographer can suggest poses, lighting and expressions that are just right for you.
- Be open with the photographer and give feedback if something doesn’t feel natural.
Inspiration in advance
- You can look for inspiration in the finished images and show them to the photographer to help them understand your vision.
Last-minute preparations
Rest and energy
- A good night’s sleep helps you look refreshed. Eat and drink lightly before the shoot to help you feel better.
Check everything in advance
- Go through your clothes, make-up and any props the night before so that everything is ready.
Relax
- In the descriptions, confidence and relaxation are evident in the images. Trust the process and enjoy the experience.
